oh man, i’ve been meaning to do this one for quite some time. i love randy’s donuts. i wish there were still more kitschy buildings around town. like, why is the brown derby not still in business?! come on now.

hooray for hollywood! does anyone else wish the sign still said “hollywoodland”? what i wouldn’t give to see that back up on that hill. regardless, as long as i live here, i don’t think the hollywood sign will ever get old. i love it so.
hey ya’ll, i’m gonna have a booth selling my little paintings at the native la flea market coming up - april 1st (no joke!) so mark your calendars and i’ll see you there!

the last couple of weeks i have had zero motivation to paint. not a great issue to have when you’ve resolved to paint at least once a week. i know it shouldn’t feel like a chore, but if i don’t make myself do it, then i’ll end up like last year only doing two paintings the entire freakin year. marshall suggested i maybe try a different style or subject to get me out of my funk, which was a great idea…but turns out the reason why i paint what and how i do is because i have no other ideas. finally i was so frustrated i just had to get something on canvas, so i ended up with these little guys. nothing special, but i guess the resolution never stipulated that they had to be special paintings, they just have to be paintings. i may go back and outline them in black like my usual style, but i do kind of like the hand drawn quality the non-outlined images have. we’ll see. so these are for the last two weeks and the current week we’re in. i have wednesday off, so i’m hopefully going to regroup in my brain, go to the art store for supplies and inspiration and run around town to take some photos.

i got a new pen and i’m super annoyed because its doing this bleeding thing on the bumps of the canvas. time to go back to the art store. regardless, i’m still pretty pleased with how this one turned out.

it’s been on my LA bucket list to go into camera obscura for quite some time. i finally did two weeks ago and it was really strange. its attached to a senior center, so it smelled like old people and old people food and was just kind of sad. and then once up there, i think it was broken…there was another girl trying to figure it out with me, but we couldn’t get the “360 view” of santa monica, it was just stuck on a view of the parking lot area if i remember correctly. so that was sad too. ah well, at least now i know. i do still love the building though.
see last weeks painting here.

ta-daaa! the last in sunny’s custom series. i love this one too! i think its a little more cartoon-y than even my usual style, but thats cool. and sunny’s in town, too! so hopefully i’ll get to see the lady friend and give her these bad boys ;-)
last weeks painting: 4/52

i’m so proud of this one. i flippin love it! i almost want to keep it for myself, but alas, it is number two in sunny’s four-part series. i’m gonna try and be better and do this weeks painting tomorrow, rather than put it off until saturday night again. but i am pretty excited that i’ve stuck to it thus far. i know its only week three, but still. i think in these three weeks i’ve done one more painting than i did all of last year. thats sad. i hope its not true. anyway…week four comin up!

ta da! painting week two! technically, i painted it a day late, but shh. this is number one in a 4-part series that i’m doing for miss sunny!

1/8/12: i took a bunch of pictures today, but this one just kind of encompasses the whole day. we walked down to the farmers market cause i was craving empanadas and it was just a gorgeous day. this leaning tree made me giggle.

1/9/12: trees two days in a row! eep! today was super awesome. woke up early and got some errands done - got ink for my printer so i can start putting these photos in my album, got a bunch of canvases so i have no excuse to get behind on a painting a week, went grocery shopping (gasp!). then came back and had some beef stew for lunch and walked to the beach and back. the four miles wore me out and gave me blisters the size of quarters - but nothin a sushi burrito for dinner cant cure.

1/10/12: playing around with new editing techniques. i have such a hard time taking photos in my apartment because its just so dark and yellow. thats the point of this project though, i guess, to learn new things and get better. so i finally got around to framing and hanging the bag that my secret santa gift came in! i love it. its so pretty.

1/11/12: wednesday we had the sweets truck come to work to celebrate january birthdays. yum.

1/12/12: i admit, i had to kind of stretch with this one. it was late and i hadn’t taken my photo yet. but i did want to talk about these shoes eventually anyway, so here goes. these were my first pair of expensive shoes. fifty dollars! they’re from the wild pair, remember that store? i was in seventh grade. my mom was so pissed. she didn’t think i would wear them. but let me tell you, i wore the shit out of these babies. eventually i got tired of them, but somehow they managed to survive every fit of feng shui madness i’ve had since then (and there have been plenty) because i just loved them so much. i left them at home when i moved to la, but every once in awhile i think about them and in my head they are so amazing that i wished i had them with me here. so finally when i went home this time for christmas, i had my mom dig them out and i brought them back with me. they’re hideous, right? i tried wearing them the other day with my pajama pants for like a seventies vibe, but it didn’t work. i have to keep them though. i know the instant i would get rid of them, i would immediately want them back because bell bottoms came back into style or something.

1/13/12: marshall and i have had a longstanding rain check for another double date with josie and joe for sausages at wurstkuche venice. friday we finally cashed it in.

1/14/12: i met marshall and his roommates in santa monica tonight for a walk and some sushi. thank god because the sunset was effing amazing.

you guys, i’m so excited about this resolution. i’ve been wanting to paint this guy for some time now, so here it is - my first painting of 2012! Its the library on ocean park and…i wanna say 31st. i just now realized that i forgot “fairview branch” underneath “library.” oops. i’ll do that as soon as i get home and then promptly post to etsy.

holy cow it has been forever since i’ve painted anything. until i was faced with the dilemma of a wedding gift for one of my best girls. i couldn’t think of anything that would be appropriate for the couple that i could afford, so i figured i would make them something! then i remembered the scene of their budding romance was a dorm at college which back in the day was a motel with awesome sixties signage - just like i like to paint! so voila - here it is - the downtowner motor inn, now oglethorpe house at the savannah college of art and design. i’m pretty pleased with it, and i hope the newlyweds are too!
